My Story

Like many, I have had my share of life’s changes. Those moments when life turns upside down and we are left aghast and confused. Mine range from personal loss, surviving war, career shifts, heartbreak, divorce, relocating to a new country, and overcoming severe illness. Each experience taught me a great lesson about the unpredictability of life and more importantly about how we each have the power to choose our response. This is still my learning edge.

My Path to Clean Language Coaching

I came across Clean Language in 2017 after a chance meeting with Caitlin Walker at a festival. At the time I had no idea of the truly transformative power of this technique, only a mild curiosity. What happened a few weeks later, changed the course of my life. I received some tragic news that left me emotionally devastated and physically ill. I knew I needed help and I knew it had to be Clean Language. Thankfully I was able to find Penny Tompkins and James Lawley — two of the world's foremost Clean Language teachers. I entered their flat with massive black ball of tar in my gut that was making me sick and I left with a radiant rainbow of love, connecting me to those I cared for. That night, for the first time in weeks, I slept well.

Embracing a New Purpose

Intrigued by the profound impact of Clean Language, I committed myself to learning and mastering this technique, so that I am able to support others in this way. What seemed like magic is a powerful tool for change. It reveals how our words and metaphors shape our experience and how they can be transformed to bring healing and clarity.

My Philosophy

Life is uncertain and unpredictable. Even though we do our best to control our lives, the nature of life is that nothing ever stays the same. Things change - whether positive or negative - and when things change something happens to us, too. We also change in response, because we have to. The question is when things do inevitably change, how do we respond? How do we internally come to terms with the change that has occurred? The internal processes that happen in our system, in response to change, will impact the rest of our lives because they affect who we become after the change.

William Bridges, the author of “Transitions”, made an important distinction between change and transition, that I feel is important to maintain:

Change is what happens externally, out in the world, e.g. there’s a power cut, we lose our job, we have a baby, we move house. Every change is an event after which life is somehow different.

Transition on the other hand is the process that goes on internally in our system in response to a change. How we “react”, “come to terms with” or “deal with” the change that has happened - the emotional processes that we experience.

Every change requires a transition. Sometimes we do this well, which is when we say things like ‘I have been able to process the grief of losing my friend’, and sometimes we don’t do this well, so that 10 years later we realise ‘I am still paralysed by the fear of heartbreak, since my divorce’!

I believe that within every profound change, is the potential for profound growth and alignment with ourselves. That is transformation. When we transition in response to a change in a way that we have gained more wisdom and growth as a person, have more confidence in who we are and have somehow matured through the experience, that is transformation. And this is what I aim to support with the work that I do.

Every transition experience is unique because every individual system is unique. My role is not to tell you what to do, because I won’t know what’s going to work for you. My job is to ask relevant questions of your whole mind-body-psychic system so you can find out for yourself from your own wisdom exactly what you need. The trust that your system knows exactly what it needs, is the foundation of Clean Language coaching and the cornerstone of how I work.

What is Clean Language

Clean Language is a questioning method developed by psychotherapist David Grove to help people explore their inner experience without adding any ideas, assumptions or suggestions from the therapist, coach or the facilitator. This is a very person-centred and holistic approach that fully respects the client and their unique experience. The questions direct attention to aspects of the client’s experience so that new insights and understanding can emerge.
